After goals from Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe had turned the game on its head and in France’s favour, following Mikel Oyarzabal’s opener for Spain, Varane joined in with the celebrations with his team-mates, donning a huge smile. Although it was impossible to tell for certain, he did not appear to be in any pain or discomfort from the TV pictures and still photographs published.

Following the full-time whistle, Varane took to his Twitter page to upload an image of himself with the trophy and wrote: “Champions.”

The United defender made no reference to him being forced off just before half time, potentially easing fears that his 43rd minute exit was, hopefully for the Reds, nothing more than a precaution.

At the time of writing, France boss Didier Deschamps had yet to speak with the media to provide an update on the defender’s condition and the reasoning for him being forced off.
