Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs debunks misinformation of Republic of Benin envisioning to be part of Nigeria

Reports circulating indicate that Geoffrey Jideofor Kwusike Onyeama, Nigeria’s Minister for Foreign Affair, stated that the President of Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, had expressed readiness for his country to be part of Nigeria.

This report is to have started after a close door meeting with Beninoise Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Aurélien Agbenonci. It was roumoured that the President of Benin-Republic mademention of this when visited President Muhammadu Buhari, a few weeks back.

The rumour stated was thr “As far as Benin REpublic is concerned, they want (not just saying it like that) but in reality, Benin should be the 37th state of Nigeria,” he said.

“We should really be one. They charged us to come together at ministerial level, to work out a framework for a sustainable relationship.”

H.E Geofer Onyeama represented by the The Ministry of Foreign Affairs a disclaimer in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr Ferdinand Nwonye, on Saturday in Abuja, debunking the news just a coulple of hours ago. His comment from the meeting, at the visit was that, both presidents discussed agreements between the two countries on how to put the issue of smuggling to an end, once and for all, as a follow up to the presidents’ meeting.
