That’s the response we asked for.
The Reds are now level on points with Manchester City ahead of their game against Burnley on Wednesday night, although Pep Guardiola’s side do have two games in hand on the Old Trafford club.
The match was a contest for less than two minutes as visiting midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz was shown a straight red card early on for a lunging challenge on Scott McTominay.
United went on to score four goals in the first half, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani finding the net. Jan Bednarek also scored an own-goal.
Five strikes followed in the second as Anthony Martial netted after coming on at the break before goals from Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes, and another Martial strike. Daniel James rounded off the scoring.

United hitting new heights
Records being broken tonight.
Second-joint biggest win for #mufc in Premier League era. Eclipses Arsenal 8-2 and matches 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley in 1997. Obviously, they won by the same margin at Forest but scored eight.

7-0
It is indeed a penalty and a red card for Bednarek.
The Saints players cannot believe it but Fernandes will indeed have the chance to make it 7-0 from the spot. And he does.
85 MINS, 6-0
Another VAR check
This is surely Bruno Fernandes’ chance to get himself on the scoresheet, after Martial was brought down by Bednarek.
A VAR check is inevitable and it comes, with Mike Dean going over to the screen to check… delay….

Penalty United
PENALTY.
This one should stand.

Greenwood wants one
Greenwood toys with the Southampton defence, before getting a shot away, but that’s not testing McCarthy too much.
The teenager would love a goal tonight. United still after more.
Sounded like Solskjaer said: 'Get more goals. Ten minutes.' #mufc

James getting involved
James looks like he’s enjoying himself, making lots of runs and trying to get himself a goal, no doubt.
Sir Alex Ferguson is watching. He’ll be enjoying this. Fernandes puts one just wide.

Search for seven
James’ cross just too deep for Martial. The search for a seventh contnues.

74 MINS, 6-0
Chances at both ends
Che Adams was denied a goal before and should probably have one, but puts it over from point-blank range. Not sure how he managed that.
At the other end, Martial nearly makes it seven but chips just wide of the net.
It’s all happening!

United haven’t stepped off
Far from it.
Would have been so easy for United to step off the gas in the second-half, but it is credit to them for being so hungry to score more. Goal difference could play a huge part in the title race. This is relentless #mufc

A fine McTominay strike
A hard and low drive from McTominay, hitting it first time after Southampton didn’t clear following a Greenwood run.
Van de Beek was onside so no problem with the Dutchman being in the goalkeeper’s eyeline.

Martial confidence-booster
A lovely finish from a tight angle by Martial, who nets a third league goal of the season — and one that he badly needed.
A great ball from Fernandes sets it up. That’s a good boost of confidence for the French forward.
KEY EVENT
Martial 5-0!
Anthony Martial with a great finish to make it 5-0!
68 MINS, 4-0
More solid from Saints
Fred’s cross forces Ings to concede a corner, from which United cannot create an opportunity.
United remain camped in the Saints’ half but the visitors are defending much better at the moment.

Left-back call is an interesting one
It says a lot about United’s desire to score more goals that Fred has survived at left-back with Alex Telles and Brandon Williams both on the bench.
You’ve got to admire the faith Solskjaer has in his subs with Van de Beek, Martial and James all in desperate need of a confidence boost. Giving them all a fair chance tonight is evidence of his excellent man-management skills.
65 MINS, 4-0
Wan-Bissaka good
Wan-Bissaka does well to tackle in the United box when Armstrong thought he was in. He’s been brilliant going forward and backwards tonight.
James storms down the left and pulls it back, Greenwood is then thwarted as he surges forward.

Rashford impressed
That was a good run-out for Rashford, though questions will be asked over why Fernandes is staying on for the full 90 minutes.

Tempo is key
United coaches are urging their players to move the ball quicker. That has to keep happening if they want to make further inroads and score more goals. Fernandes tries to do just that but his flick gives the ball away. Wan-Bissaka then does well tackling back.

United caught out, but VAR saves them
David de Gea didn’t seem happy with United for not being alert from a free-kick.
After a lengthy delay, VAR rules it out! That was very very close.
De Gea furious he hasn't got a clean sheet. Seemed to be swearing in Spanish. He's still going on about it! #mufc

Keeping the hunger
It says a lot about this United side that they are so hungry for more goals in the second-half.
It would be understandable to back off and take a comfortable three points now, but they are clearly hungry to bolster their goal difference – something which could be crucial in the title race.

United yellow
Martial nearly in for a goal, as Stephens closesd the door on him at the last moment.
Maguire is then booked as he follows through late on Stephens. 50 MINS, 4-0DOMINIC BOOTH
Keep-ball
Some solid possession play from United early in this second half, without a major chance as yet. Wan-Bissaka’s cross too high for Van de Beek.

New Fred position
Fred playing at left-back, in fact, seems to be the tactical change that comes from that half-time double sub.
That will be interesting.

Three-man back line
The half-time subs are a bit odd with United switching to a three-man defence – but I guess now is as good a time as any to at least give that experiment a comfortable run-out.
