Boro are looking to push through a deal until January after Robbie Fowler’s East Bengal opened talks with the free-agent forward.

Boro boss Neil Warnock is keen not to lose out on someone he’s had training with his team for a few weeks to improve his fitness, during which time Watmore had impressed Warnock.

The 26-year-old was looking for a new club after his Sunderland contract expired in the summer on the back of two serious knee injuries.

Warnock missed out on Everton’s Yannick Bolasie and West Brom’s Kenneth Zohore and has suffered injury to key striker Ashley Fletcher. 14:16

PSG STILL KEEN ON ALLI

PSG are still interested in signing out-of-favour Tottenhammidfielder Dele Alli when the transfer window reopens for business in January, reports the Daily Mail.

KLOPP: I KNEW JOTA WOULD ADAPT QUICKLY

More on Man City:

In League Two there was another managerial casualty as Tranmere sacked Mike Jackson, Bolton suffered another damaging defeat and we look at two strikers still performing at opposite ends of their careers in Port Vale veteran Tom Pope and Crawley youngster Max Watters.

Jurgen Klopp says he is not surprised how quickly Diogo Jota has adapted to Liverpool’s playing style and made an instant impact at the club.

Jota has scored three goals in the Reds’ past three games, coming off the bench to net a winner against West Ham which secured the points to put his new club top of the Premier League table.

That strike took his Liverpool tally to four for the season, an impressive start following his £45m summer transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers and one which has not come as a surprise to his manager.

“He’s good, as players should be when they join us,” Klopp said at a media briefing ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Atalanta. “He’s experienced and has already played a lot of football in the Premier League.

“He’s a really good boy and he’s a really good signing. I knew it would not take long for him to adapt because the intensity level from Wolves is very high.

“The boys on the wings have to run like crazy so we knew physically he would be good. Then it’s all about finding your feet in a new environment.

“It was easy for him to step into the squad and it’s good that we have more than 11 who are in a good shape at the moment.”

Stewart Downing is back at Blackburn Rovers for a second spell and is available for Tuesday’s game against Middlesbrough – the side where he started his career.

Blackburn had offered Downing a new deal, only for talks to stall, but terms were eventually agreed to bring the experienced midfielder back to Ewood Park.

Mick McCarthy has made a surprise return to club management after taking charge of Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia, signing a deal until May 2022.

The 62-year-old has been out of a job since leaving his role with the Republic of Ireland in April this year and has not worked at club level since being sacked by Ipswich Town in 2018.

APOEL have confirmed Terry Connor – who has worked as McCarthy’s assistant at Wolves, Ipswich and Republic of Ireland – has also been brought in.

EVERTON EYE ISCO MOVE

Everton are in the hunt to sign Real Madrid playmaker Isco and reunite the Spain international with old boss Carlo Ancelotti, says the Sun.

The 28-year-old – who is contracted to Los Blancos until the summer of 2022 – has made five appearances for Real in La Liga this season, although he has yet to appear in the Champions League.14:16

BOSNICH: MAN UTD SHOULD BACK SOLSKJAER

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes the club should publicly back manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and says the Norwegian must be given time to fulfill the “potential he has shown”.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho watched Gareth Bale score the winner against Brighton – and then declared his intention to check the reaction in Madrid.

Bale climbed off the bench to head home the first goal of his second spell in north London and it was an important one as it earned a 2-1 victory which moved Spurs up to second in the Premier League.

The Wales international arrived back at Spurs on a season-long loan from Real Madrid in September after a torrid final couple of years in the Spanish capital, where he fell out of favour with Zinedine Zidane and was heavily criticised by the fans.

Mourinho was delighted with the “improving” Bale – but could not resist a cheeky barb in Real’s direction.

“I’m very pleased for him, especially for him because he deserves that,” Mourinho said. “When I have five minutes I’m going to Safari to look at Madrid websites to see what they say.”

JONES’S JANUARY BURNLEY MOVE UNDER THREAT

One player who could be heading for the Old Trafford exit door in January is Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

However, according to the Star, the one-time England international fears a potential move to Burnley in the January window is now under threat amid a planned takeover of the Clarets.12:30

‘SOLSKJAER MIGHT HAVE TO MAKE SOME TOUGH DECISIONS’

With another transfer window coming up in just two months, Gary Neville feels Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have some to make some gutsy decisions on personnel.

“He might have to make some tough decisions, Ole,” said the former United captain on his podcast.

“There are eight weeks to go until the January transfer window. He might have to upset a few. He’s going to have to be selfish. He has to back certain players, but ones that he doesn’t want, leave them out rather than trying to fit them all in.

“He’s rotating from game to game to try and keep everyone happy, but he’s going to end up losing himself if he’s not careful. There needs to be an element of consistency.

“It’s a concern in that there doesn’t look to be a balance. It felt like every move Mikel Arteta made was controlled. With Ole, he’s got a group of talented, expensive players that he’s trying to work into a system. He’s going to have to pick a couple of the talented ones and tell the rest of them, you’re not playing.”

JOSE’S CHEEKY DIG AT REAL OVER BALE

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has praised Gareth Bale’sperformance after the the on-loan forward scored the winner against Brighton in the Premier League.

Right, let’s kick things off this morning with a quick roundup of some of the biggest stories making today’s back pages.

NEV EXPECTS LIVERPOOL SIGNING

Gary Neville touched on Liverpool in his latest podcast – and said he expects Jurgen Klopp to make a January move for a centre-back to help fill the sizeable void left by Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

“I thought the signings of Jota and Thiago were clever – they supplemented what they already had – and it wouldn’t surprise me in a few weeks if they go and deal with the Van Dijk issue and sign a centre-back to get them through – even if it’s on loan. I think Jurgen Klopp will be nervous about them being more exposed.”

Jamie Carragher has his say on whether Liverpool’s summer signing from Wolves, Portugal forward Diogo Jota, deserves a place in the Premier League champions’ starting XI.

MAN UTD WANT HAKAN CALHANOGLU ON A FREE

Manchester United are in discussions with Hakan Calhanoglu over signing the AC Milan star next summer, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.

“I’m still incredible happy here [at Man City], I still have the desire to do well and this is the most important thing.

“Now, there will be elections at Barcelona and hopefully they can choose the right people for the right board to maintain this incredible club at the highest level.”16:06
